HAPPY 2017!!! I cannot believe it is the start of a new year already. This year literally flew by so fast!

Often times in the new year people set new year’s resolutions that fall off within the first few weeks of the year. I, myself, am guilty of letting it happen. A few years ago I gave up on the idea of new year’s resolutions altogether because it seemed like a bunch of crap to me. They still kind of do…not to say that they may not work for some. For me, I find that instead of making these sudden changes, I react more positively and effectively to gradual lifestyle choices. I find that going cold turkey cutting myself off to all of my guilty pleasures only makes me want them even MORE! That is the exact opposite effect of what I want to happen. So, I guess these are what you would call my Anti-Resolutions. With gradual lifestyle choices you can slowly introduce new ideas, responsibilities, rituals, etc…and you aren’t completely thrown out of your element.

Without further ado, here are my Anti-Resolutions for 2017! (but also for like, ever…):

Spend more time outdoors: I love fresh air and I seriously do not get enough of it. When you work and spend 8+ hours in an office it does become more difficult to spend time outdoors. Especially this time of year because it is dark and cold when you walk out of the office, and it just makes me want to cuddle. This one will likely be the hardest for me, not because I don’t want to spend time outdoors, it just physically and logistically will be less likely to happen because, well, life…I plan on taking advantage of my weekends and will try to go on hikes, run outdoor instead of the treadmill at the gym, or even something as simple as taking a walk on the beach or a nice path.

SAVE SAVE SAVE!: Yes, 2017 will be the year of savings. There are so many things that I believe the future holds for me (i.e. wedding, house, babies, etc…) so I am making it a priority to be able to afford them when the time comes I have also recently opened an IRA so that I can begin to save for retirement (ugh, so adult….I can barely handle it). I also plan on making a spreadsheet with all of my monthly bills to set a “fun spending” budget for myself as well as figure out how much I can save monthly and still be comfortable.

Travel more: I have been fortunate enough to go on a few trips in my lifetime, however, I haven’t even scratched the surface on the list of places I would love to visit. Right now is the perfect time to travel for Cody and myself; we have no animals, no kids and no house. Unfortunately, traveling costs money, so this resolution definitely goes hand in hand with #2! We are determined to become frugal travelers, so be expecting some posts on that in the future!

Eat less sugar: For the most part, I would definitely say I have a pretty good diet. There are some things I refuse to give up (Del Taco and In-N-Out I am lookin’ at you!) But, in general, Cody and myself put extra effort into giving our bodies the best fuel possible. I do have one major downfall; SUGAR. Yeah, I love that shit. I crave it daily, and it is so bad! In 2017 I vow to make a conscious effort to reduce my sugar intake. Has anyone seen my willpower?

Spend less money on material possessions:
If you know me, I LOVE shopping. I do. I also just love things, love to have things, love to touch things, love to wear things…ALL THE THINGS!!. I recently watched a documentary on Netflix called “Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things.” Needless to say I am not ready to be a full fledged minimalist, however, it made me realize that I have SO MANY things that I do not use. Can you imagine how much money I would have saved if I didn’t buy those items to begin with?! I plan on going with the “24 hour rule.” If I want something, I will set a reminder on my phone to revisit it 24 hours later, whether it be in store or online, and take that time to really think about if that item is essential to my life. In turn, I plan on spending more money (but not overspending!) on experiences instead.

Focus on wellness, in general: To me, this means caring for my body in a more holistic way. Care about all of the sums that complete my whole, and encourage others to live and treat their bodies the same way. This means caring about what food you are putting into your body, what products you are putting onto your skin, detergents and cleaners, etc… This will likely become quite an important part of not only my life, but also of this blog.

With that being said, there’s going to be some changes around here! Yes, that is right, be expecting slightly different posts and inspirations from My JennaRaetion. I will be sharing some of my favorite workouts, recipes (both of the healthy and splurge variety), reviews of books, podcasts, and there may still be some beauty and fashion sprinkled in from time to time. I am REALLY excited for all of the new changes and I hope that you will follow along with me to make 2017 your best year yet!

As always, thank you so much for reading and for the support. It means so much. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if you ever have a post suggestion let me know!

My Top 13 Favorite Shows to Binge Watch

In college, I didn’t really watch that much TV. I mean, every once in a while I would sit down and watch an episode of The Voice (mainly because I am in Love with Adam Levine) but mostly, I was just too busy. While I am still, by my standards, a pretty busy person I do watch a lot more TV. I guess it is because my life has completely changed into the life of a working adult, and at the end of the day, it is just nice to sit and watch some TV. It also doesn’t hurt that there are some crazy-entertaining shows out there. Here are my top 13 and the ones that I think are worth your time.

1. Friends: This is my ALL TIME favorite TV show. I have seen it all the way through about 10 or so times. I think I have most of the episodes memorized at this point. I could also probably tell you what hairstyle Rachel had for each season. To say I am obsessed is an understatement. I always tell Cody that if we get married, I want to make our entrance into the reception to “I’ll be there for you.”

2. Game of Thrones: I was REALLY REALLY late to this one. But, after being repeatedly told by multiple people that we needed to watch it, we finally did it. I must admit it did take a good season to fully become enthralled, but when it gets ya, it GETS YA! Seriously, the storyline is too nuts, the costumes are beautiful and intricate, and the fight scenes are way too real and intense. I think it has something for everybody.

3. Weeds: This show has been around for awhile now (originally aired on 2005, ended in 2012) but we just barely watched it through all the way a few months ago. Then again a second time just recently. It was that good. I like to call Weeds the “watered-down female version of Breaking Bad.” What I liked most about this show was the unpredictability of the story line. Also, it has a killer soundtrack.

4. The Walking Dead: Just WHOA. This show is intense to say the least. I originally thought it would be a little much for me, but I got SUPER into it and just kept wanting to watch. Thinking about how a zombie apocolypse would absolutely turn the world upside down is just nuts. Watch it, do it!

Yes, that is Dr. Drake Ramoray…

5. Pretty Little Liars: Yes, love this show and I am not ashamed! I can’t help it, the drama just simply draws me in cannot wait until all of the newest season comes to Netflix so I can binge watch the crap out of this teenie bopper gem.

6. Parks & Recreation: Amy Poehler is right up there with Jennifer Aniston in terms of “women I want to be when I grow up.” Everything she touches is GOLD. This show is no exception. This is definitely the type of happy/witty show you need to watch between watching Game of Thrones and The walking Dead.

7. Friday Night Lights: TIM RIGGINS. Google him. The small town in this show reminds me of where I grew up, and it brings back all the hometown nostalgic feels. Also, FOOTBALL PANTS.

8. The Office: I did watch this back in high school, but ultimately forgot about it and never finished it when I went off to college. Cody and I just recently watched it the whole way through and I was pleasantly reminded HOW GOOD IT IS. Rainn Wilson the funny uncle you want your children to have growing up.

9. How I Met Your Mother: HIMYM, as I like to call it is most definitely up there with Friends. I just want to be friends with everyone on this show, especially the notorious womanizing forever man-child, Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris, whom I adore).

10. Sherlock: I have the hugest nerd-girl crush on Benedict Cumberbatch probably EVER. He is seriously adorable and mega talented. This modern-day rendition of the British Spy and his right-hand-man will have you glued to the TV, episode after episode, I promise. The episodes are actually really long, like mini movies, but so easy to sit and watch. It currently has three seasons with the first two containing only three episodes each and the third season containing 4 episodes. I have done a bit of research for you, and the good news is that apparently the very in-demand cast has been filming the fourth season all through spring and summer, and will be released on new year’s day 2017. HURRAH!

11. Stranger Things: Ok, so there is only 1 season of this one, so you can only kind of binge-
watch…but IT IS SO GOOD, so I had to include it. I was hooked from the very first episode and just had to keep watching. It is sent in the 1980’s and gives a total Goonies vibe, but slightly darker. It is rumored that season two is in production and will be released Summer ‘17. NOT SOON ENOUGH, NETFLIX!

12. Chef’s Table: In this documentary-type show they showcase a new chef every episode and talk about their background, their style of cooking, the restaurants they have opened, and it is incredible. The pictures are crisp, the stories are raw, and the food looks delicious!

13. Mad Men: I haven’t finished the last season of this one as of yet. I am sad it will be over. I always wonder what it would be like to have been alive in the 1960’s and 70’s. This show gives you a peek into that. Plus Don Draper (in the earlier seasons) is a BABE.

I honestly hope that you give a few of these a chance this cuddle season. Recently my perfect Saturday night has been cooking a delicious meal then settling down to watch a few episodes of our current show. Do you have any favorites? If so, let me know in the comments below, or you can email me! I always love suggestions and talking to those with similar show interests as me!

Hope the rest of your week is FAB!

Puppies & Plaid

Yes, I know my snapchat and insta story was completely flooded with videos and photos of this little nugget, I just can’t help it. He is seriously so cute. I have been wanting a puppy forever and ever, but Cody and I just can’t get one right now. We both are so busy and work a lot, and feel it would be wrong to just leave a pup home all day. We have promised we will get one (and spoil it!) when the time is right. Until then, we will have to borrow this little guy from his parents every so often.

His name is Brody and he is a Shiba Inu and Husky mix. He is Cody’s parents pup, and has only been in the family for a week now. He is very stubborn, headstrong and independent. But also very, very sweet and mostly docile and nonchalant. Brody literally doesn’t bat a lash when another dog walks by. When we had him at the beach about half a dozen people came up to pet him and he just sat there like a huge ham. There was this family of kids who were in his face trying to kiss him and all he did was give them gentle face licks. So sweet! However, about 8 o’ clock every night he gets this huge burst of energy and turns into a demon dog for like an hour and a half? Yeah, definitely giving props to Cody’s parents for dealing with that every night!

But it was super fun to spend the weekend with him and get a little puppy love in. We also saw Doctor Strange and it was really good! Such a good weekend! Love going into the week so happy and refreshed.

Hope everyone has a fantastic week!

A few weeks ago Cody and I took a trip to Cancun, MX. Cody had really been wanting to travel or take a trip somewhere to break up monotony and I whole-heartedly agreed. So, when the opportunity presented itself, we booked a 5 day 5 night stay at the Grand Oasis Sens.

The Grand Oasis Sens is an all-inclusive sister to the Grand Oasis. It is a 21 and over resort, and from our experience we feel that it is geared toward couples who are looking for an intimate getaway. It had several restaurants, three different pools (one with a swim-up bar….say what?!), and of course it is on the beach. The reason I do say it is geared towards couples is there is a lot of little nook-type lounges and cushions that are kind of hidden and in corners so you can get a bit of privacy. The beach front not only has chaise lounges that you can take advantage of, but also these super cute canopy-covered bed cushions that are awesome if you want to snuggle up next to your sweetie and get some sun at the same time.

Speaking of time with my sweetie…it was very important to both Cody and myself that we treated these 5 days like a true vacation away from everything that is the “norm” for us. This meant we left our phones in the room most of the time and didn’t go on social media all that often and absolutely NO working on the blog. This and the fact that that we were soaking in the amazing 80 degree water the whole time meant that we did not get as many photos as I had hoped for….but we had an amazing time!

Here are a few of the photos we managed to snap when we weren’t in the water…

We got to sail in a boat (a little bigger than this one) to the Isla Mujeres

We found a rainbow giraffe print wall and I almost died!

My favorite part about the island were the brightly colored buildings and the murals up and down the main drag.

We got to drive these mini speed boats through the “jungle” to some coral reefs to snorkel.

My stud.

Yes, it was a very relaxing and fun few days in paradise with my Babe. I feel very fortunate that we were able to get away and spend that time together. Now that the “tropical beach vacation” is out of my system, I am ready to see the rest of the world. We are thinking about Eastern Europe next….any tips or places that we absolutely must see? Tell me in the comments below!

As always, thanks so much for reading. I hope your weekend is both relaxing and productive!

My Brother got married!!!!

On Saturday, September 10th, 2016, we had the pleasure of witnessing my brother, BJ, marry his perfect match, Rebecca, in a beautiful and nautical-themed ceremony at the California Yacht Club in Marina Del Rey, CA.

**I apologize for the lengthy post, but there were just too many good photos not to share.

I had shared a bit about Rebecca’s bridal shower in this post, so I thought I would round it out by sharing some of my favorite photos and tid-bits about the wedding.

Getting Ready:

Plus the Moms

Putting the Bride into her dress

The Bride wore a gown that was A-line with keyhole back & intricate lace overlay over silk

A bit about the dress:
Lourdes by David Tutera in the color ivory/champagne
-The lace cap sleeves and keyhole back were a customization made to the dress so that they could be taken off for the party after the ceremony
-Gown purchased through Panache Bridal of Pasadena, all fittings and customization was done through Panache Beverly Hills

The Ceremony Space/Venue:

Every wedding needs a hashtag, right?

The ceremony space

Sail boat table numbers

The inside of the yacht club was very intricate with beautiful staircases and a beautiful wood floor

My brother and his best man used a CNC router to make this awesome sign that marks all of the special places in BJ and Rebecca’s lives. I loved it!

The Ceremony & Reception:

The groom and his men

Bridesmaids dresses are the Versa from David’s Bridal in the color ‘Mystic’

Crying just a little bit

Giving the bride away

Man and wife!

A boat totally honked when they were making their way back down the aisle. It was hilarious!

I had to throw this one in, because it is my crazy cool grandpa, or as most like to call him “Andy Anderson” tearing it up on the dance floor!

These photos were taken by Rebecca’s incredibly talented uncle, Ken Landau.

I hope you all enjoyed my favorite little snippets from the wedding. It was truly a beautiful and special day that I will remember always. Congratulations to the happy couple, BJ and Rebecca! Cheers!

Anaheim Packing House

Hello Friends!

Recently, Cody, his sister(Erika) and myself went to the Anaheim Packing House for a little trio date.

Located in downtown Anaheim, the Packing House is part of the refurbished historic district. It is surrounded by a cute park, farmers market and a lot of cute little shops and food.

The packing house is basically a giant food court filled with all kinds of gourmet food-truck type food. I am absolutely positive that almost anybody can come here and find something they love.

Cody got this delicious pork belly on ciabatta and these short rib poutine fries for us to share from The Kroft, which I can describe as comfort food…reinvented.

I got this po-boy and seasoned fries from The Chippy, which is a fish n’ chips type establishment.

This is Cody’s cute sister, Erika.

This right here is my moon and stars…ha! We have been watching too much Game of Thrones!

After we ate and got ice cream, we went outside and walked around this mini farmer’s market thing that was going on. They had fruits, vegetables, honey, hand-made things, a mobile boutique and a mobile thrift store….so cool!

There was also this awesome grassy patch of grass and places to sit and enjoy the fresh air. We also got to see so many puppies, which was obviously just really cool.

Overall, it was not a bad place to spend a hard-earned Friday night. If you live in the Orange County, or surrounding areas, I highly suggest you spend some time there and get some delicious food! You can never go wrong with food!

Have you ever been to the Anaheim Packing House? What did you eat?

Thanks for Reading!

Bridal Cake Pops for our RLL’s Shower!

Ok, just super excited because this is probably the biggest event in the history of our rather tiny family since my brother and I were born…

Yes, my older brother BJ Swanner is FINALLY getting married to Rebecca Lee Landau (also known as RLL…soon to be known as RLS!)

Back story behind why the cake pops were necessary and highly requested: BJ has a birthday party almost every year, which are typically super fun backyard-bonfire-bring-your-own-meat-to-grill-and-beer-to-drink type parties. Every year I volunteer to bring dessert (because let’s be honest…its necessary). Every year I ask BJ what he wants and without hesitation he requests dark chocolate covered devil’s food cake balls.

So, the cake balls have kind of become a favorite among my family. I mean…not to toot my own horn but they are pretty amazing.

So, when we pinned down a date for RLL’s shower, she immediately emailed me and requested some “bridal” cake pops….and of course, I obliged.

Bridal, to me, means basically as white as possible. So, white cake with white chocolate coating and pearly white sprinkles it is!

The day before the shower my mom came in from Palm Springs to help me out with the cake pops. With MANY pops to make…we got started in the kitchen cake pop making factory! WARNING! This is VERY time consuming, but also VERY worth it!

What you will need:
-3 white cake mixes (I added one funfetti for a surprise because RLL loves funfetti)
-2 cans vanilla frosting
-Eggs and oil for making the cake (at least 4 eggs and 4 cups oil)
-Cooking spray for pans
-Wax Paper
-A baking sheet (two makes it a bit easier)
-Cake pans (size doesn’t really matter for this)
Pop sticks
-Bright White Candy Melts You will need at least 3 bags this size.
-Some really pretty pearly white sprinkles
Styrofoam Disc
-At least 1 big bowl (2 if you are doing multiple flavors of cake)
-Big spoon for mixing

Step 1: Bake the cake(s) and crumble:

I would HIGHLY recommend actually baking the cakes the night before you make the pops.

Follow the directions on the cake box and bake the cakes, let them cool.

Once the cakes cool, you will take your (clean) hands and crumble the cake and put it into a bowl.

White cake on the left, Funfetti on the right!

Step 2: Add Frosting to Cake Crumble

You will need to add a little less than 3/4 of a can of frosting per cake mix.

Since I had made 2 white cake mixes I put a whole can and a little less than a half in the white cake and then about 3/4 of a can of frosting into the funfetti.

Go ahead a take a big spoon or silicone spatula and mix that frosting into the cake crumple REALLY WELL.

Step 3: Form the Pops and Place on Baking Sheet

Cover a baking sheet with wax paper.

Once the frosting is well mixed into the cake crumble, you can take a regular spoon from your silverware drawer and scoop about enough to make a heaping pile in your spoon, then use your hands to tightly pack and form the mixture into a ball.

After You form the balls you can put them on the wax paper and let them freeze for about an hour or two…trust me, it is worth it for the next step. (Especially if your apartment is like 80 degrees)

Step 4. Dip the Pops in Chocolate

Follow the directions on the back of the chocolate package to melt it. (I did it in the microwave) Put the chocolate in something tall-ish with a handle. I used the nutribullet cup as pictured below, but if you have a tall mug with a handle, that will work too. Pretty much what I am trying to say is….a handle makes it much easier!

You will then want to dip the tip of the stick into the chocolate then stick it about 1/2-3/4 of the way through the cake ball.

Dip the cake ball into the chocolate– make sure you coat the ball entirely.

Then you will need to twirl the pop stick around in your fingers as you *GENTLY* tap off the excess chocolate on the lip of the container that is holding the chocolate.

Step 5. SPRINKLES!!!

When the chocolate is still wet (before it hardens…act swiftly!) Go ahead and use your fingers to sprinkle the pretty little sprinkles all over the cake pop evenly.

I luckily had my dear mother helping me…so we developed a sort of system where I dipped the cake balls and she then sprinkled them.

After you sprinkle them stick the bottom end of the pop stick into the styrofoam disc that you bought until they dry/harden.

YEEEEEEEE!!!! CAKE POPS! Every sugar lovers fantasy!

OK, So here are some snippets from the BEAUTIFUL Bridal shower for RLL:

Time for tea….Rebecca and BJ, meant to Bee!

What bridal shower would be complete without a mimosa bar?!

RLL and her beloved cake pops!

RLL’s Mother (Melissa), RLL, My Mother (Trudy) and Myself

All the girls!

The Groom even stopped by for a quick game. This picture seriously cracks me up! Their faces!

Cheers to Rebecca and BJ! Wishing you both all the best!

I hope you also enjoyed the cake pop tutorial. If you have ANY questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know or comment below. It is a lengthy process…but they are so YUMMY and most definitely worth it!

Quick Trip: Julian, CA

A few weeks ago Cody, Cody’s Parents (Scott & Tracy), his sister (Erika) and myself took a quick day trip to Julian, CA.

Julian is a small town an hour East of North East San Diego County in the Cuyamaca mountains. It originated as a mining town in the 1870’s.

We stopped along the way at the little village in Vista, CA off the 78 for a little brunch before heading up the mountain. We ate breakfast at this cute little whole in the wall place that got rave reviews on Yelp. It was called Allen’s Alley Cafe and it was literally in an alley. But SUCH GOOD FOOD. I got juevos rancheros, and I highly recommend if you enjoy Mexican food as much as I!

There were SO MANY cute wall murals that we definitely had to take a photo op….or like 10.

After brunch (& photos!) we drove on up to Julian. The drive there is so pretty. It is beautiful countryside with cows and horses roaming the open fields. It was such a refreshing juxtaposition to the freeways I drive on every day of my life.

When we got into Julian we parked the car and spent the rest of the day on foot walking around. You can pretty much walk the whole “downtown” area of Julian.

Erika, Tracy and I walked around and looked in all of the little shops while Cody and Scott went and tasted some wine.

The shops are absolutely adorable. My favorite one was called “The Warm Heart.” It had cooking gadgets, vintage jewelry, vintage and handmade furniture and SO MANY LITTLE TRINKETS! It was super fun to walk around and just touch everything (yes, I am SO like a kid who needs to touch EVERYTHING).

After we walked around it was time for pretty much the main reason we went there….APPLE PIE! We went on over to the Julian Pie Company.

It was just way beyond delicious! We may or may not have ordered an entire pie for just the five of us….and we also may or may not have eaten an entire pint of vanilla ice cream with the pie. #YOLO

It was just a perfect little slice of heaven!

After we ate our weight in scrumptious apply pie we hobbled around town some more to walk off a few calories.

Overall, it was a really fun and relaxing day. It was really refreshing to get to a place a little off the grid that was slower paced than normal, city life. I am from a really small, rural town and I couldn’t wait to get out and live in a bigger city. Little did I know that I would occasionally crave the small town life.

Hope you enjoyed the mini tour of Julian, CA!
